Low-carbohydrate diets or low-carb diets are dietary programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption usually for weight control or for the treatment of obesity. Foods high in digestible carbohydrates (e.g. bread, pasta) are limited or replaced with foods containing a higher percentage of proteins and fats (e.g. meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese, tree nuts, and seeds) and other foods low in carbohydrates (e.g. most salad vegetables), although other vegetables and fruits (especially berries) are often allowed. The amount of carbohydrate allowed varies with different low-carbohydrate diets. Such diets are sometimes ketogenic (i.e. they restrict carbohydrate intake sufficiently to cause ketosis). The Induction phase of the Atkins diet is ketogenic.

The term “low-carbohydrate diet” is generally applied to diets that restrict carbohydrates to less than 20% of caloric intake, but can also refer to diets that simply restrict or limit carbohydrates.

Low-carbohydrate diets are used to treat or prevent some chronic diseases and conditions including: cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and diabetes, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome (see ketosis) and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

  3. I didn’t know so much about hypertension and what would be the best antidote or prevention to it. Gladly that I have found and read your post. Your diet has a great impact to your health even NaCl would bring wrack havoc if not monitored, since then I cut off my sodium chloride intake. I am also getting to use low-carb diet.

  6. I think low carb diet is very healthy. It needs to be balanced though. Low carb diet is excellent for high blood pressure and diabetes. I’ve noticed myself that when I eat less carbohydrates I have so much more energy. Definitely worth to try.

  8. I’ve been having low-carb diet for years and I gotta say that it’s my favorite. You see, I tried every diet program anyone could think of but upon trying the LCB (as what I call it), I have never looked back and my success story is the inspiration of my friends and loved ones.
